More Outlook and Exchange Performance ImprovementsJust after we sent out our February newsletter focusing on improving Outlook and Exchange performance, Microsoft released a cumulative update that includes an enhancement that addresses one of the biggest Outlook 2007 performance issues. In this issue we will discuss this cumulative update, any lingering Daylight Savings Time issues and provide a bunch of additional links on Outlook and Exchange performance. On February 25 Microsoft made a new cumulative update available for download which contains the fixes and improvements planned for the upcoming 2007 Microsoft Office suite Service Pack 2 (SP2). More details of what is included in this update can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=968009. While you may want to wait until Microsoft finalizes this service pack and publishes it for general distribution, if you are running into Outlook 2007 performance problems you may not be able to wait. In any case this cumulative update is fully supported by Microsoft and has gone through the same type of testing normally devoted to a service pack, it is just that the Outlook team felt that these updates were important enough to get out as quickly as possible. In order to improve the performance of Outlook 2007, Microsoft changed the way Outlook writes to OST (used to improve performance when working remotely) and PST files as well and improving how data is written to your hard drive. One side effect is that these files will grow by approximately 20%, so to allow you to control this behavior Microsoft included the ability to turn off this new feature as documented here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=968413, but hopefully you have the extra disk space available and will not need to! Daylight Savings Time Problems? While most issues with changes to Daylight
Savings Time (DST) have been resolved, you may still be experiencing some
lingering issues. To help you resolve these Microsoft has provided a Daylight Saving Time Help and Support Center here: And our partner, IT Edge, has created a simpler and more direct set of instructions: Your workstation should be automatically updated for the latest DST updates, but if you suspect you have not you can obtain them through this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955839/ Under Outlook
2003 the duration of an appointment changes from one hour to two hours
unexpectedly when the appointment occurs at the same time as the DST
transition, so if this happened to you please refer to this link: Useful Outlook and Exchange Performance Links

http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2007/contactsearch.htm Not really a performance issue, but the fact that the new Instant Search requires the user to rebuild the index periodically is important.
