Speeding Up Outlook
Several
years ago we published two newsletters focused on improving Outlook and
Exchange performance: Improving Outlook Performance 2
Since speed is still an issue for many Outlook users, we decided to search for additional articles from other authors that are relevant. Here is what we found:
How to Optimize and Make Outlook Faster This article focuses on reducing the size of the PST (or OST if you are working with Cached Exchange Mode) file where Outlook stores all your e-mails locally as well as removing extra Outlook Add-Ins. One interesting point was that Microsoft speech and handwriting recognition features are loaded by default but can be removed by following the instructions provided here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823586
Complete Guide to Making Outlook Faster This one was written back with Outlook 2007 was the current release and has a couple additional ideas including running the Mailbox Cleanup Wizard, disabling Outlook’s RSS feature, compacting your PST file, and downloading complete IMAP items if you access POP3 e-mail accounts like Gmail or Hotmail using Outlook.
How to Make Outlook Run Faster The main article only discusses how to setup a new PST and copy old e-mails into it from your default PST, but it has links to an additional article on How to Increase Microsoft Email Speed,
Another way to make Outlook run faster is to make your entire PC run faster! Here are some articles that address that:
Kill Autorun Programs to Boost PC Performance Over time a typical PC becomes littered with small applications that automatically start-up when you boot your PC. These are usually installed during the installation process of some other software and are used to monitor for updates or provide some feature that you may never use. This article discusses how you should periodically review these Autorun applications using this Microsoft tool Autoruns for Windows v11.
Fast Tips To Speed Up a Slow PC
Never Miss a Meeting Again with Reminder AlertsHave you missed a meeting because the Outlook meeting reminder window was not displayed on top of your other open windows? Unlike previous releases of Outlook, Outlook 2010 does not place a pop-up dialog on top of your other windows to remind you of your important meetings and if you are using Windows 7 this same problem occurs with Outlook 2007 and 2003 too.
Fortunately there is a solution called Reminder Alerts written by Phil Seeman, one of our TeamScope partners who runs More Productive Now! Reminder Alerts is currently free and can be downloaded from here. Also check out the review by David Gewirtz in Outlook Power. TeamScope CRM 5.1The most significant feature of this release is support for Outlook 2010, including support for the new Ribbon interface in the main Outlook window:
